Creative Coding

With the availability of potent computers and frameworks like Max/MSP + Nato (later Jitter), PD/GEM, Macromedia Flash (later Adobe) a new creative coding movement emerged in the late nineties, lead by artists like John Maeda, Joshua Davis, Adrian Ward, Dextro, Casey Reas, Matthew Fuller, Marius Watz, Netochka Nezvanova,...

It lead up to the current abundance of frameworks with Processing, VVVV, Openframeworks, etc. and an understanding of programming as a creative instead of a purely functional skill.

In 2000 Adrian Ward and Alex McLean presented their "Generative Manifesto". Although written from a musical perspective it still holds the core philosophy of the movement.
